FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and have made the decision that want to switch electricity and gas providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new electricity and gas provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor will continue to supply electricity and gas to your house even if you switch to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from your distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that your electricity and gas supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover cannot take place until your current provider has sent your final bill, and they can't do that until after your next meter reading. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also notify your current provider that you are switching away from them. The actual switch in providers won't happen immediately, because the old provider needs to read your meter one final time. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is totally free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Save money with these electricity -saving tips

Here are some easy to implement tips to reduce how much you spend on electricity

  • Eliminate draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or out via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Reduce use of the clothes dryer. Hang the clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for the weather (booties, warm socks, jumper, beanie).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cool air in, and closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you don't use, so that you just cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Use less lighting. Rely on natural light if possible.
