Electricity Market Competition in Victoria

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create greater competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. The states have between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

The electricity market in Victoria was completely deregulated on 1 July 2008 . This meant that consumers could, for the first time, change to another provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in Victoria is supplied by the following distributors

  • Jemena
Jemena provides electricity in the south-western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.
  • United Energy Distribution
United Energy distributes electricity in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and to the Mornington Peninsula.
  • Powercor Australia
Powercor provides electricity in the western Victoria and western suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Ausnet Services
AusNet Services distributes electricity to eastern Victoria and the eastern outer & northern suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Citipower
Citipower distributes electricity throughout Melbourne City and inner suburbs.

Tips for how to use less electricity to save on your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented ways for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (booties, warm socks, jumper, beanie).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Don't use the clothes dryer as frequently. Hang the clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cool air in, and then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you just cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible. Turn the lights off if there's no none in the room.

FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and have made the decision that want to switch electricity and gas providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity and gas provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply electricity and gas to your house after you change over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from a distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be certain that your electricity and gas supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover won't go ahead until after your current provider has sent your final bill, and they can't do that until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also notify the current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual switch in providers will not happen straight away, though, because the current provider needs to read your meter one final time. then issue you their final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is totally free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
