The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.
The next stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote greater competition the market was separated into two levels
- Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.
The electricity market in NSW was fully deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that customers could switch to a provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.
Electricity in NSW is provided by three distributors
- Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity country and regional NSW, and in southern regional QLD. - Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies 2.4 million people with electricity in homes and businesses across the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney's Greater West. - Ausgrid
The Ausgrid network provides electricity to eastern, northern and inner metropolitan Sydney and north to Newcastle and the Hunter region.
Tips to lower electricity consumption and lower your bills
Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce your usage of electricity
- Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
- Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
- Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
- Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
- Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
- Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.
