Electricity Market Competition in NSW

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.

Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate a greater level of competition the market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. States have between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , the market in NSW was completely deregulated. This meant that customers could, for the first time, change to another provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy's network provides 2.4 million people with electricity in homes and businesses located in the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney's Greater West.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy supplies electricity regional and country NSW, and throughout southern regional QLD.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid distributes electricity throughout eastern, northern and inner metropolitan Sydney and in the Hunter region and Newcastle.

Tips for reducing your electricity usage to save on your bills

Here are a few easily implemented ways for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • Don't use the clothes dryer as often. Hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Dress for cold weather, rather than turn on the heater, (booties, beanie, jumper, warm socks).
  • Turn off your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so you just cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Reduce your use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows during the night to let the house cool down, and then closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.

FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and you've made the choice to switch electricity and gas providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity and gas provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply electricity and gas to your premises when you change over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from a distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, your electricity and gas supply will not be interrupted because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover won't happen until after your old provider has issued you your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll tell the current provider that you're changing providers. The switch in providers won't happen straight away, though, because the current provider will have to read your meter again, one final time. then send you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is completely free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by your new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
