FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you have made the decision that you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new gas and electricity provider provides you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply gas and electricity to your house even after you change over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, but they buy the energy at wholesale rates from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase gas and electricity directly from your distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your gas and electricity supply won't be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the actual switchover will not go ahead until after your present provider has issued your final bill, and they can't do that until after your next meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will inform the current provider that you're leaving them. The actual transfer to your new provider won't happen immediately, though, because the current provider needs to do a final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. The new provider starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor that feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is totally free to you. However, we will receive a commission from your new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to reduce your electricity consumption to save on your bills

Here is a list of easy to implement ways for reducing how much you spend on electricity

  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or out through the gaps under doors or around your windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Put on warmer clothing, instead of turning on the heater (beanie, warm socks, jumper, booties).
  • Don't use your clothes dryer as often. Dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows during the night to allow the cool air in, then closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Use less lighting through the use of as much natural light as possible and replace older lighting with LED lights.
  • Close doors of rooms that aren't in use, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
