The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.
The next step, which happened earlier in some states, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce greater competition the energy market was split into two levels
- Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2013 , the electricity market in South Australia was fully deregulated. This allowed consumers to switch to another provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.
South Australia only has one main electricity distributor
- SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity in South Australia - Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce household expenditure on electricity
- Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (booties, jumper, warm socks, beanie).

- Turn appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.

- Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air entering or escaping through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Prevent the hot sun over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
- Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cooler air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
