Electricity Market Competition in SA

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater amount of competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Every state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The South Australia market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This meant that, for the first time, consumers could switch to the provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

South Australia has just one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Tips to reduce energy consumption to save money

Here are some easily implemented ways to reduce how much energy you use

  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Avoid using your clothes dryer. Instead, dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (warm socks, jumper, booties, beanie).
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Close doors to rooms that you aren't using, so you just heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to allow the house cool down, then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and decided that you'd like to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new energy provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and stay with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply the energy to your house if you switch over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from the distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your energy supply will not be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. But the switchover won't take place until your current provider has issued you their final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll notify your present provider that you're switching away from them. The actual changeover in providers will not happen immediately, because your current provider will need to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
